Beta-Amyloid

Indication

Alzheimer's disease, memory examination.

Reference range

Reference range in CSF:

Normal level > 550 ng/L for individuals > 18 years.

Interpretation

Beta-amyloid is the major component of plaques and is formed from amyloid precursor protein (APP). The level of beta-amyloid reflects metabolism of beta-amyloid and plaque formation. Low levels are seen in Alzheimer's and Lewy body dementia.
Alzheimer's: Moderate to severe reduction (sensitivity> 85%) CJD: Normally, slightly lowered Frontotemporal dementia: Normally, slightly lowered Lewy body dementia: Easy-moderately reduced Vascular dementia: Normally, slightly lowered ALS: Normal

Normal aging, MCI (Mild cognitive impairment) without progression to Alzheimer's, depression, Parkinson, non-acute cerebrovascular disease show normal levels of beta-amyloid.
