Phosphorylated neurofilament heavy chain (pNfH)

Indication

Suspicion of progressive ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis).

Method

ELISA

Response

Reported as ng/ml

Interpretation

Increased phosphorylated neurofilament heavy chain (pNfH) in CSF can be found in several diseases with neuronal/axonal damage in the central nervous system and correlates with levels of neurofilament light chain (NFL). High levels have been reported in ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) and in the early phase it may support the diagnosis and predict a more rapid disease progression.

The following intervals apply for result interpretation in CSF:

> 1.52 ng/ml: Increased level
0.69-1.52 ng/ml:  Borderline
< 0.69 ng/ml:  Normal
